Is Your AC System Ready for Fall?

October 15, 2021 | Blog

As summer and warm weather is winding down, cooler temperatures are on the horizon. Before you know it you’ll be taking out your jackets, hats and mittens, and layering up for the fall and winter season.

In addition to preparing yourself and your wardrobe for the temperature change, you also need to prepare your heating & AC system for the transition. With the fall and winter seasons rapidly approaching, it’s time to start asking yourself if your AC system is ready for a temperature drop. Below are steps you can take to welcome colder weather, ensure your HVAC system is ready to perform efficiently and keep you warm and comfortable in your home.

Remove Debris From the Area Surrounding Your AC Unit

Over the course of the season leaves, branches, vegetation and other debris can collect around your outdoor unit. Cleaning away this debris can be helpful in ensuring that your unit is ready for winter use.

It can also be beneficial to cover your unit’s condenser with plastic or plywood after you’ve removed any debris. A covering can help keep the surrounding area clear and functioning well throughout the year.

Change Your Air Filter

Your home’s HVAC filter can become extremely clogged and dirty if it isn’t cleaned regularly. Cleaning your air filter at least once a month, and especially right before the arrival of colder temperatures, can help your system run more efficiently and get your system ready for fall.

Inspect Your Furnace

Before the cold arrives you should also take a look at your home’s furnace and your furnace’s burners and blowers. You should check your furnace leading up to and during Fall to ensure that it’s functioning properly and has time to adjust to working around the clock to keep your home heated.

It might take a while before your HVAC system starts functioning smoothly again and adjusts entirely, but if any issues persist for a significant amount of time you should contact a professional. At Absolute Comfort Air we offer a variety of heater services and can perform a heater tune-up or inspection to get your system where it needs to be.

Invest in a Programmable Thermostat

Fall weather and temperatures can be unpredictable and vary from day to day and even hour to hour, which is why having an adaptable HVAC system can be helpful.

Having a programmable thermostat installed can help relieve the stress put on your HVAC system as it tries to keep up with fluctuating temperatures. A programmable thermostat can also help resolve issues you’re seeing with inconsistent heating during the fall months.

If you do invest in a programmable thermostat and the issues you’re seeing with your heating don’t resolve, you should contact an HVAC certified professional and think about scheduling an AC tune-up.

Schedule Fall HVAC Maintenance

One of the most important steps you can take in preparing your system for colder weather is scheduling professional HVAC maintenance. A heater tune-up prior to the fall and winter seasons can go a long way in ensuring that your home system is prepared to address all your heating needs.

You can also prevent encountering issues with your AC system as you go into the fall months by scheduling regular AC tune-ups and professional inspections throughout the year. Regular maintenance by certified professionals can help keep your system in top shape and ready for whatever the winter throws at it!
